Today (Saturday, February 9) we arrived in Puerto Quetzal Guatemala. We visited a local Coffee Plantation. It was great! They showed us how the coffee is red like a berry when it is first harvested. We squeezed a bean out of the shell to taste. Although we thought they would taste bitter, we were surprised at how sweet & sticky they were. They allowed us to taste some coffee, then we hiked up a mountain where the coffee plants are grown. It was very hot and the trail was steep. It takes 2 years for the plants to grow before coffee beans can be harvested. A single plant will produce for 25 years. The coffee beans are picked by women & children. Hard work for them!
Afterwards we went to a marketplace where they sold handmade items. We bought beautiful piece for my dining roomt table & trinkets for the girls.
